What is a School Council?
A school council is a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, [and] community members…pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C.
What are the main areas of responsibility for school councils?
The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
- Reviewing the annual school building budget
- Formulating a school improvement plan

School Council Elections
Elections for the Bowen School Council are held if the number of candidates for open postions exceeds the number of available postions. Parent members are elected for 3 year terms. The Bowen PTO administers these elections online.
School Council Meetings
School Council meetings for the 2014/2015 school year are scheduled for these dates at 7:30 – 8:30 am in the Principal’s office:

February 3 – cancelled due to snow
