Volunteer for the 2017/2018 Bowen PTO

Volunteering with the PTO is a great way to show your commitment to our community.  And it gives you a chance to have a lasting impact on your child’s education while making good friends and having fun along the way.  There are many ways to get involved with the PTO based on your available time and interests.  We have dedicated volunteers from last year to help you get started. Step up today to help us create the Bowen School experience we want for our children.

It’s easy to think another parent will step forward to help provide the many services, events, and funding provided by the PTO and depended upon by the School.  But the reality is we really need parents to take the lead on many programs.  Without parents to lead these programs, we will not be able to fulfill our goals.

PTO Operations:

PTO Executive Board/Co-Chairs:  Join the Bowen PTO Executive Board as one of 3-4 co-Chairs and work with our Principal, teachers, and parents to create a robust school community here at Bowen.  Help set the PTO budget.  Represent Bowen on the newton-wide PTO Council. Provide leadership for the various PTO committees, events, and activities.

Treasurer: Help our current Treasurer oversee and manage the PTO Budget of over $70,000.  Manage cash deposits, matching funds, reimbursements, and tax filing.  As member of the PTO Executive Board, work with the co-Chairs to ensure smooth operation and provide sound financial advice.

Room Parent Coordinators: As room parent coordinators, oversee the 24 class room parents, answer questions and help disseminate information from the executive board.

School Traffic and Safety Rep: Work with the Executive Board and the Principal to improve compliance in the Blue Zone and with all school safety measures.

Website Admin: Maintain bowenpto.org.  Help with technical issues.  Input on design is welcome.  Knowledge of WordPress a plus. We really need help and an 0n-call person to help us!

Playground Committee: Join the playground committee and help us rebuild our aging playground

Technology Committee:  Did you know the PTO’s in Newton are a major source of technology? Join the technology committee and help Bowen reach the Newton Public School standard for elementary school

    

Communications

Online Communications: This group works closely with the PTO co-chairs on our weekly email newsletter, website, Facebook and Twitter. Most updates will be provided by the other programs and some are even automated. Parents responsible for this program ensure communications are distributed in a timely manner. This position is great for working parents as everything can be done at flexible times.

Directory: The school directory is the go-to source for contact information for all Bowen families. We can do an online only or add a printed version again. Responsibilities include: assembling the printed directory in the beginning of the year, maintaining the online directory and soliciting advertisements for both.

Lobby Display:  Are you the creative type?  Be responsible for keeping the lobby display up to date (in collaboration with all other programs). This includes the outside display, the wooden displays inside as well as the new LCD lobby display.

Events

Back to School Picnic:  The Back to School Picnic is the first community event of the year and very popular among all families. The committee will organize entertainment/activities and food (traditionally pizza).

Halloween Committee: Organize the Halloween Party with the materials and plans from last year as your guide. Create flyers for the event to be distributed to families.   Organize volunteers to collect contributions, man the food table, help decorate, set up and clean up.

Fundraising

Bowen Walks the Walk: This year will be the 7th annual Bowen Walks the Walk. On the event day itself, children are outside on Bowen Upper Field for physical activities organized by our PE teachers. During the two weeks before the event, children raise funds from family, friends and neighbors in support. This group is responsible for organizing donors, matching the money raised (or part thereof), distributing envelopes for money collection and communicating to families before and after the event

Fall Gala & Auction Committee: This committee will organize the first-ever the Fall gala and auction to raise money for larger capital initiatives like the playground.  This year is our first year doing a Gala, and planning is underway.

Spirit Wear: Help us get a line of Bowen T-shirts, Sweat Shirts, Caps, and more for sale to raise money for the playground.  We have the design.  We have the vendor.  We have the store. Now we just need someone to help pull it all together.

Mystery Dinner: an event for Bowen parents to meet each other, where the mystery is, who you have dinner with!  It’s a great way to meet other Bowen parents and connect with ones you already know!
