Summer Kids & Teens programs with Newton Community Education are filling fast! But we still have openings in lots of our week-long programs for elementary and middle school kids. Elementary schoolers and younger kids can get artsy in our Lions & Tigers & Bears class, get dramatic in Young Broadway, get into science in any of our Wicked Cool science and engineering programs, or get sweaty in our Soccer & Sports or Flag Football camps. These are just some of our many still-available options. We’ve also added new programs the last two weeks of August, including Wicked Phab Physics Lab, Wicked Wacky Lab Week, and Create a TV Show. Middle schoolers have lots of opportunities to get technical with us this summer: try our new Adventures in IT, Picture Projects, or Music Masterpieces with Garageband classes, for example. High schoolers can get a leg up on the college application process with our summer SAT prep classes or college essay writing class. And of course we have several sessions of Driver’s Ed this summer at both high schools. We have summer offerings for adults too, and kids ages 16 and up are always welcome in our adult classes. For more information or to register, call NCE at 617-559-6999 or visit our website at www.newtoncommunityed.org, where you’ll find our Summer-at-a-Glance chart to help you plan something new and exciting each week.

Raffle ticket collection has begun! This week we will be collecting tickets every day during drop off and pick up times. Don’t forget, you will receive 5 free tickets for every 25 tickets you turn in with payment by tomorrow, Wednesday May 16!

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It is critical that we are successful so we can continue to fund the activities of the PTO including teacher stipends, Creative Arts and Sciences Programming, Understanding our Differences and the International Pot Luck Dinner to name a few. We haven’t had a fundraiser since the Book Fair back in November so we are hoping you will all do your part in selling those tickets. And it’s an easy sell with so many wonderful prizes. (Please note that the Amazon gift certificate is actually $200 -listed as $100 in the book).

When you turn in your paid tickets, we also encourage you to bring in your extra raffle ticket books and prize books. To keep our printing costs low, we print as few as possible and all your unused books and tickets can be used by someone else at school.

We will also be selling and collecting raffle tickets for the first hour of Spring Fling on Sunday.

Thanks for buying and selling lots of tickets; by supporting our school we are ALL winners!

How important is a global perspective today?

As our world becomes more interconnected, what better way to learn about China and have a family on the other side of the world! Share your home, your family traditions, and American culture with a Chinese exchange student or teacher for the 2012-2013 fall school year. Participants all speak English and are eager to learn about American culture and to share their culture with you. Beijing Jingshan exchange students and teachers arrive mid-September and depart mid-January. Students attend regular classes at the high schools and lunches are provided. Participants will travel on Columbus Day weekend, Veteran’s Day weekend, Thanksgiving holiday, and winter holiday. We are especially in need of host families for female students for next year. Families do not have to have high school students as families with younger children also make strong connections with the visitors. For further information, please contact the chairperson of the Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program: Donna_Fong@newton.k12.ma.us.
