Host Families Wanted

How important is a global perspective today?

As our world becomes more interconnected, what better way to learn about China and have a family on the other side of the world!  Share your home, your family traditions, and American culture with a Chinese exchange student or teacher for the 2012-2013 fall school year.  Participants all speak English and are eager to learn about American culture and to share their culture with you.  Beijing Jingshan exchange students and teachers arrive mid-September and depart mid-January.  Students attend regular classes at the high schools and lunches are provided.  Participants will travel on Columbus Day weekend, Veteran’s Day weekend, Thanksgiving holiday, and winter holiday.  We are especially in need of host families for female students for next year.  Families do not have to have high school students as families with younger children also make strong connections with the visitors. For further information, please contact the chairperson of the Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program: Donna_Fong@newton.k12.ma.us.

Drive a Senior — Make a Friend!

Newton at Home, a member organization dedicated to helping Newton seniors age in their own homes, is looking for volunteers who can give rides to seniors.  Make a new friend while helping someone get to a doctor’s appointment, the supermarket, a social event or the airport.  Volunteer as much as you can at your convenience, and know that you have made a difference in a Newton senior’s life. You’ll meet interesting people and share great conversation along the way!
Newton at Home is also looking for volunteers to help with marketing communications and public relations.  If you are creative and a good writer and are looking for a wonderful organization to help, look no further!  For more information, call Julie Plaut Mahoney at volcoord@newtonathome.org.

Cradles to Crayons Donations

Junior Girl Scout Troop 73010 is organizing a community children’s clothing (and other items) drive for Cradles to Crayons.  Clothes needed from newborn through adult medium.  This is a great time to clean out your closets of outgrown but still in good shape clothes.  Go green and help children in need.  Books, baby equipment, toys and games are welcomed too.  The drop-off will be at City Hall during Newton Serves, on April 29th from 9:00 – 3:00.  We did this last year and filled a truck.  This year we are hoping to do better, maybe even fill 2 trucks.  For more information about Cradles to Crayons and donations needed, go to:  http://cradlestocrayons.org/boston .  Other questions about the drive:  feel free to contact – Alicia Bowman  atalicia.bowman@comcast.net

Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation Fundraiser

Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy is holding its 2012 Open House at the NNHS Auditorium and selling tickets to benefit the Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation. Helen Gee Chin was the administrator at CCMAA for 15 years and a proponent of preserving the history and promoting the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. The Foundation is a tribute to her life’s passion. The Foundation awards college scholarships to encourage academic achievement and motivate individuals to become serious martial artists. Last August, two students received $2500 each, and we expect to award that amount or more this year.

The Open House/Fundraiser will include lion dance, dragon dance, kung fu and tai chi demonstrations, and Chinese choreographed dance. Tickets are $20 apiece. To buy tickets or to learn more about the Foundation, please go to www.hgcscholarshipfoundation.org
