OPEN HOUSES FOR HIGHLANDS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Newton Highlands After-School Program, just for middle school children is hosting Open Houses for interested families on:  Thursday, March 1 from 5:30-6:30 P.M., Sunday, March 11 from 5:00-6:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 27 from 5:30-6:30 P.M., Saturday, April 7 from 4:00-5:00 P.M., Sunday, April 15 from 5:00-6:00 P.M. at Brigham House, 20 Hartford Street, Newton Highlands. This is a terrific opportunity for parents of 5th graders to learn more about the program as they plan for the next school year. Free Parenting Workshop Series

Do you feel your kids don’t listen to you?  Does every request turn into a battle?  Do you feel all alone with these issues?  Are you ready for a solution?   The free parenting series, PARENT MANAGEMENT TRAINING is enrolling now.  It will be held for 6 sessions from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays starting on February 28th.  The group will meet at the Newton Outpatient Center, 64 Eldredge St, 02458.  Pre-registration is required.  Call Rachel Nenner-Payton at 617-969-4925 x5958.  Co-sponsored by The Newton Partnership and Riverside Community Care.  Join other parents of elementary-aged children and a professional facilitator to explore these issues and learn new strategies using Parent Management Training (PMT), an evidence-based program for parents developed by Alan Kazdin, Ph.D., of Yale University’s Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic.  PMT has been consistently proven to decrease behavioral problems and increase positive behavior in children.   It is highly effective in reducing tantrums, fighting, and disruptiveness.  If you have tried other methods of changing your child’s problem behavior and haven’t had any success, then PMT may be the solution for you.  This group will be co-led by Rachel Nenner-Payton, LICSW and Elizabeth Pond.  Rachel is a senior clinician at Riverside Community Care in Newton.  Co-sponsored by The Newton Partnership and Riverside Community Care.

KIDS4PEACE, Benefit Concert

KIDS4PEACE, Benefit Concert will take place on Sunday, March 18th, 7 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Newtons.  The West Stockbridge Chamber Players, professional musicians who play with the Boston Symphony, Boston Ballet, and Boston Pops Esplanade, among others, will perform the Brahms Clarinet Quintet and Borodin Trio in g. Magic Flutes & Cello Friends, Musical Performance at Waban Library Center

The Waban Library Center (WLC) welcomes the Magic Flutes, directed by Deborah Charness, March 3rd at 11am.  They will be accompanied by Cello Friends, directed by Nancy Hair, and pianist Jennifer Baverstam.  The Magic Flutes are a flute ensemble of nine Newton youngsters who have performed at the WCRB Cartoon Festival in Symphony Hall Boston, Cabot Park Village in Newton, Russell’s Garden Center in Wayland, and the Angier School Multicultural Festival.  Coffee and pastries will be served compliments of Starbucks Coffee.  The event is open to the public; suggested donation of $5 per person/$10 per family.  The WLC is a non-profit organization, staffed solely by volunteers, and relies entirely on private donations.  See www.wabanlibrarycenter.org.  The WLC is located at 1608 Beacon Street in Newton, a short walking distance from the Waban T stop on the greenline.

The Waban Library Center Presents Get Healthy and Like it! , A Panel Discussion Thursday, February 2,7:30-9pm,Waban Library Center 1608 Beacon Street.  The panel includes, Dave Becker is chef and owner of the wonderful Needham restaurant, Sweet Basil, where he serves healthy, delicious, local food.  Linda Crowe, WLC Volunteer and notable vegetarian, will share how she crafted a diet that helped her lower her cholesterol 40 points without drugs. Ellen Cohen-Kaplan, occupational therapist and fitness and expert, will share some fitness and nutrition tips to keep you on track through the winter months and beyond.  She’ll also discuss the latest fitness guidlelines and show you how to set up a home gym for under $50. NEWTON’S REVOLUTIONARY ROOTS – THE 2012 NEWTON HISTORY SERIES” Our United Sentiments”: Boston, Newton, and the Cause of Liberty
Boston is famous as the vanguard of the American Revolution–but the Revolution would have been impossible without the men and women of rural Massachusetts.  This talk explores the revolutionary network that linked Boston and its neighbors, including Newton. The leaders of the resistance against Great Britain made a massive effort to galvanize Massachusetts. The Durant family and their community offer a window into the inner workings of the Revolution. Benjamin L. Carp, Associate Professor of History at Tufts University, is the author of the recent book, Defiance of the Patriots: The Boston Tea Party and the Making of America.
